On August 1, 2023, the city of Kyzyl, the capital of the Republic of Tyva (Russia), hosted the workshop dedicated to the topic “Local Governments and the SDGs” for members of the Council of Municipalities of the Republic of Tyva. The event was organized by UCLG-Eurasia jointly with the Khural of Representatives of the city of Kyzyl.

The seminar was attended by more than thirty participants – heads of municipalities of the Republic of Tyva.

Irina Kazantseva, Head of Kyzyl, and Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia, welcomed the participants at the beginning of the workshop. Rasikh Sagitov delivered a speech in Tuvan and Russian, having highlighted that the cooperation of local governments of the Republic of Tyva with UCLG-Eurasia had started with his first visit to the republic 10 years ago. He stressed as well that the topic of the workshop is relevant both for the city of Kyzyl and for all Russian cities. “In Russia, 12 national projects actually aim at achieving the SDGs. In 2020, at the UN High-level Political Forum, Russia presented its first Voluntary National Review of the SDGs achievement. All this testifies to the Russia’s commitment to the SDGs’ implementation”.

Tansylu Nurieva, Learning and Research Program Coordinator of UCLG-Eurasia, informed the participants about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the key principles of the SDGs including the following ones:

·        to leave no one behind

·        integrated nature

·        partnership-based approach

·        multi-level governance

·        accountability.

Each principle was well illustrated by best practices from all over the world. Special emphasis was placed on SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities” and its linkages with other Goals.

The participants discussed the issues of biodiversity of Tyva and possible measures to preserve it. According to SDG 15.9 “Integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning, development processes”, it was recommended to integrate biodiversity in the Strategy of Socio-economic Development by 2030 being developed by Kyzyl.

Rasikh Sagitov, Secretary General of UCLG-Eurasia, shared the experience of the regional section’s engagement in preparing the Russia’s Voluntary National Review of the SDGs’ achievement.
